POLSKI FIAT 126 Rally Car Project Must See! - 02-09-2010, 10:50 PM

So my father is building a new house for us, as Im going away to Cornell next fall. Its gonna be a little smaller, as theyre downsizing, but theres more land and were going to build a barn.

So if theres a barn, there needs to be stuff in it. My family has never really collected any collector cars or unique cars. I mean, we've had 2 mk2 jettas, an mk3 gti, and a eurovan, but those are hardly special stand-out garage queens. So I convinced my dad we need some toys to fill the barn with.

He agreed buying a snowmobile and a 4wheeler as were moving into Newstead from Clarence and were gonna have a few acres and snowmobile trails are nearby.

But the things I am most exited for will come after Spring Break. Thats becuase my dad, my brother and I are going to Poland for 2 weeks as both my parents were born there and they still have family there. My dad's first car in Poland was a Fiat 126P. It was a car produced under license in Poland from 1973 to 2000. Its pretty much the butt of all jokes in Poland, they were terribly simple and underperforming cars that were completely cramped. But yet they were fun having Rear engine, RWD. So my idea and my father's idea for a unique car to have is to get a Fiat 126.

So when we go to Poland, were gonna pick up one and send it over on a container to the US, since most are older than 25 years old. We researched importing it and it would likely not be a problem. The cost? 400zloty=133USD(yeah there cheap haha) + 600(having it shipped, we got quotes already). To top it off were gonna fill the rest of the container with 2 eastern bloc motorcycles. The first is a Romet Komar my uncle has and he said we can take it, the second is my grandfather's bike that it sitting in the basement of our apartment in Warsaw. IT should be in immaculate condition. IDK the manufacturer but the bike it at least 85 years old, pre WWII.

The plans for the FIAT are to make a replica of a Polish Fiat 126P Group 2 Rally Car from the 70's. There is a company in Krakow that supplies the kit needed to convert the car. Also we plan on swapping in a motorcycle engine around 1100cc to replace the stock 600cc 25hp v-twin.

Below are some pictures and links of our plans:

1970's actual group 2 rally car, these show the simplicty and size haha

I really need to find out what the 85 year old bike is, ill keep you posted.

Also I make an update when I go to Poland in April

Thanks, and feel free to leave any thoughts

sounds awesome! a modest house with some land and a garage full of toys trumps a larger home in the suburbs any day of the week.

I'm really interested in seeing how the conversion goes. If you guys have enough land you should set up a mini track for the 126.

I had no idea any car was ever produced in Poland. Man, Fiat liked to sell off their designs to Eastern European countries!

I remember seeing those cars in Holland, they are the "better looking" of the bunch of econoboxes out there.

X...

Damn... that car is sweet. It makes a mini look huge! Looking at that Scania over the road truck looming over is quite the juxtaposition. Hell, the Passat variant is like an old Ford Country Squire next to a Beetle!

This FONT is for you leftcoaster!

Audi A4 Avant quattro, folgen sie nie. Walter Rohrl is my God.

Point me in the right direction! I've been looking for around 10+ acres or so with a decent barn/shop for the last year and a half. Still looking...
