One other item when you took off the timing belt did you mark which way it was rotating (you may still have it on the lower crank pully) make sure to reinstall so that it stays in the same rotaional direction. If you took it off and did not mark it, replace it. If you are not sure of its age replace it. If you have any hesitiation about it replace it. Did I mention about replacing it! .
The timing belt has about 20 on it and is rotating the same way.
No worries.

the belt was in great shape. we used white-out to mark where it was before removal. the tb was done right before I puchased it, so it has about 15-20 k on it. no cracks, no ripped ribs, looked smoooooth

yes, cyl 5 had a smack, you could really only see the mark on the carbon build up on the piston, the piston itself seemed to be a-ok.

this new head should be grand, I'm guessing the springs in that old head were pretty beat.

old springs+ high rpms = float = tweaking valves. when you turned the cam by hand you could tell it wasn't seating right at all

god I learned a lot the other day. brian, if you need any help in the future lmk. i'll bring cait, she can hang and drink margaritas with your gf haha

Jam,

Just FYI you can not tell the health of a timing belt from its appearences. It will shit the bead even if it looks good. The two things that kill the timing belts is age(oxidation, which weakens the molecular bond in the material that is not visible) and mileage.
