Soaked Carpets - 06-30-2009, 08:53 AM

I tried to find the source last night, but was unsuccessful in my attempts to find what is causing the large amounts of water behind the passenger seat of my wife's car (2003 A6 Avant). The carpet was completely soaked, but the rear driver side was bone dry. I looked to see if maybe the sunroof was leaking (due to the large amounts of rain we have been getting) but it was dry and clean, not to mention the headliner was dry.
The only other thing that I could see, was two vents under the seat, I assume that they are apart of the HVAC... but I am not sure, and would/could they cause the flood? LMK what you guys think.

Thanks,
Matt

HVAC inlet will allow water in, but only when the rain tray drains are clogged. pull the battery, and the tray underneath and clean out the leaves. if that checks out, next is to fold up the carpet on the passenger side, and clean out the A/C drain. once the door trim is removed, and potentially the glove box (4 or 5 screws) fold the carpet back, and pull the rubber drain tube out and clean it.

It could also be the sunroof drains. If I remember right, the drains are located in the rear wheel wells. Audidiy has a write-up on how to clear them.

behind the passenger seat would be sunroof.

i pushed a flexible rod down them and then blew compressed air down, seemed to solve the issue, then i sold it 3 weeks later

Said flexible rod would be a speedometer cable, no?

well, i pulled the battery...under the tray was clean.
the sunroof drains empty out at the B pillar and at the rear bumper (or at least according to Bently)- fished the b pillar and nothing but couldnt find the rear, nor do i believe that its coming from the sunroof. but nevertheless i will try and locate the rear one this weekend...i just don't feel like pulling up the carpet (eventhough I think thats whats gonna end up happening.
there could be no other possibilities?

Thanks again

behind the drivers seat is where the water settles in an A6. i've been down this road before... make sure your rain tray and hvac filter housing are in good repair and are not cracked and seat tightly with the body where they are attached. then pulll the carpet up. it's two screws for the kick panel, yank up the door sill and just grab the carpet and fold it back to gain access to the A/C drain. it comes down from behind the glovebox area and goes through the floor. one 10mm plastic nut should be holding it down. yank it out and clean it off with brake kleed or simple green to get the cosmoline off of it or whatever is clogging it. if it's full of fuzzy crap or dog food you have a creature habitating in your heater box and more exploring is necessary.

If/when you get it figured out pull or shop vac the carpets and then
go to the RV supply place and get a couple of the dehumidifiers.
The ones that use the little pellets do a nice job of
sucking up moisture. And they are pretty cheap.
