I still say hog out the cat for the aforementioned reasons. You will still prolly have to move the o2 sensor a bit further out of the stream, though.

Cats don't make an exhaust system louder per say. jeller's Evo had all the cats out and was till quiet till the muffler was changed. My 335 might not have cats either and it sounds stock.

if you go the no cat route, look for a bigger downpipe.
the stock 1.8T downpipe is a bottle neck

I was looking for the least hack way possible. I can pick up a downpipe with test pipe and spacer within my price range so I am leaning more towards that route.

As long as you can get it inspected, go for it. Nothing hack about a well done job of cleaning out a good solid condition cat until it's super smooth and bolting it back in. It looks stock, adds good tone and great flow. Test pipes, especially from the standpoint of appearing legal, are the most hack way possible.
