School me on cats... - 02-28-2010, 02:37 PM

Hi flow cat?
Standard cat?
Test pipe?

Benefits of each.
Legality as far as NYSI.

Any experiences with certain products?

Tell us way more about your car... motor, usage, power goals, NA/boosted? all that helps.
Have to have a cat to pass NYS inspection.

Test Pipe: No Cat. Highest Performance. Loudest. Will not pass NYSI (aka illegal).

High Flow: Better performance* than standard. Louder. Will pass NYSI most of the time and therefore legal.

Standard: Lowest performance*.

*I've had a high flow cat on a 3" GHL downpipe and an oem one. I didn't feel any noticeable difference in performance. I would imagine you would only notice a difference without a cat. That high flow thing seems like a bunch of BS to me.

On test pipes can't you run an o2 sensor spacer to trick the emissions test?

there's a way to cover up pretty much everything. I have no experience with that specific mod though.

Yes, but inspectors are "supposed to make sure" the cat is there...
