Anyone having problems with Ethanol in fuel? - 08-04-2010, 10:45 AM

Liz's Cooper has had problems with bucking and running fairly terrible. The car has been acting this way for months, but two days ago, it got worse and the check engine light finally came on. It has thrown codes for misfires on all four cyl. The dealer claims that they tested the fuel, and it contains 20% Ethanol, 10% more than what is supposed to be in there. The service advisor said that it's a common issue with most of the gas stations around here, and bad fuel is not covered under warranty. They want some $264 to flush the system, clean the injectors, and dispose of the "bad fuel."

It currently has a full tank from Sunoco in East Aurora (looks like I got scammed!). I was planning on using a syphon kit to get the fuel out of the mini, and put it in my Honda, because I'm sure it will run fine on it. The more I read about the issue, the more it looks like it's a cooper S turbo (R56) issue. I have owned some 17 cars and never had an issue with fuel from any of the many different fuel stations that I purchased from.

Anyone else having issues with fuel in cars that aren't Mini Cooper Turbos?

I'm not sure if its my imagination or not but occasionally (i.e. rarely) find gas with 0% ethanol my car seems to run better. sometimes after filling it up with gas from whatever gas station with ethanol i occasionally get misfires when i hit WOT and sometimes it stutters.

but then again it could be because the car is 11 years old with 178k miles on it.

oh, and i also LOL'd at the scammed.

I might be wrong, but I think when MTBE became illegal, it was replaced by ethanol for reduced emissions. Who knows?
