New member + Old Jetta = Tranny problems - 08-29-2010, 10:14 AM

Hi all,

New member, and new to the VW world, but I just picked up a 96 Jetta GL Wolfsburg in great shape, for a steal.

Starts up, and idles great, however theres a tranny issue.

There is a clutch pedal (and it returns to its proper position after pressing), I can get it into every gear (when the engine is running and when its off), but when I release the clutch I have nothing. No sounds of banging or grinding, no movement, nothing.

I have not been able to get underneath it yet, to verify fluid levels. I hope to do this this week.

But any initial thoughts would be very helpful.

Thanks,

deedge

Check the clutch cable; If it's broken you'll have no clutch action at all, but I believe there is a helper spring that returns the pedal to its original position in mkIIIs, so you might think it's working. The mkIII clutch cables are also self-adjusting, but if there's a tear in the adjustment boot the cable can get rusty and will stop adjusting.

Will it go into gear with the clutch depressed and the motor running? Where are you located?

OP hasn't posted in two days; maybe he figured it out!

Responses from previous questions...I have not tried putting it in gear, while running without the clutch...

I live in Cheektowaga, and yes, this just happened all of the sudden (according to the previous owner) he had just pulled out of the driveway and was heading down our street, went to third gear and RPMs
