01e trans issues - input shaft seal leak. - 09-01-2010, 11:56 PM

A little while ago I got my car running and about 20 miles down the road the transmission input shaft seal started leaking pretty badly(noticable puddles/drips). So I pulled the trans, replaced the seal etc and put the trans back in. 20 miles later...... leak is back and the whole underside of the car is covered in a glorious scented gear oil. Grand.

Fastforward to this week...... New motor, new input shaft seal...... I put 40 miles on teh car and the leak was back, real bad again. puddles/drips everywhere. So as a last ditch effort I pull the trans, replace the input shaft seal again, and start the motor without a trans on it(starter is bolted to trans adapter, so this is doable)...... let it idle/warm up etc without the trans... and obviously no oil comes out.

I put that trans back in and give it a good 30 miles of smooth sailing(god this car drives great!) and boom, its pouring out again.

Input shaft looks straight......... I should also note that even when filled with fresh oil on the OLD/LEAKY input shaft seals, if I stand the trans on the bellhousing overnight, NO oil comes out. None.

So, presumably Bracketracer will be the only one to have any insight into this............ but "what the fuck"?

You're absolutely sure it's not overfilled? Sorry, that's my only guess.

Filled with exactly 2.4qts. As per spec.

check and clear the trans case breather. once everything is moving it creates a bit of pressure and the seal is the easiest route out. but only when the gears are moving.

Do you have a pilot bearing in place?

I agree. Check the flywheel, as well as the pilot bearing. Make sure thats in there square. If these items are F'd they may cause the input shaft to orbit around in there. Has this been a problem from day 1? Or did it start after a tranny swap?
Good luck, let us know what you find.

Did you check the level? A lot of people overfill their transmissions because the tranny never got completely drained. My last roommate did this after I replaced his Civic's transmission, and I dropped his transmission a 2nd time for nothing. He followed the spec for his Civic, but forgot that the used tranny we got wasn't completely dry when we put it in (automatic in that case, so it was all in the torque converter).

It's still likely to be one of the other suggestions, but I if you check it and it's over the line, that's at least part of the problem.

Yes, there's a pilot bearing in teh flywheel, but its a custom clutch/flywheel for the VR6 conglomerated from an 034 flywheel custom machined by clutchmasters to make the twin disk fit.

My though was that the flywheel or pilot bearing was slightly off center, or perhaps the pilot bearing isn't quite tight around the input shaft. I guess I'll end up pulling the flywheel off and having it checked. That's going to suck.

You should totally give up. Take the easy way out, and find a new hobby while you're at it.
