Coolant leak or just burping? - 09-02-2010, 12:34 PM

I had to replace that annoying plastic coolant flange about four weeks ago, but since then I've had to add coolant twice. Not a huge amount (less than 1/2 gallon altogether), but I'm wondering if this is normal.

Since I haven't had to use the heat in the car, is it just burping air that might be in the heater core, or should I be looking for something more significant? I don't see any leaks or steam, and I imagine I'd have some steam coming out of my exhaust if it were the head gasket. Suggestions?

Oops! Sorry. It's a 2001 Audi TT 225 QC (1.8t). I keep forgetting my car's not in my signature..

Update: turned out to be the O-ring between the coolant temperature sensor and the coolant flange. I was a moron and re-used my old one when I replaced the flange, so it decided to start pissing coolant on my way back from Utica two weeks ago, forcing me to add tap water almost every step of the way. I've only had to add about half a gallon since I replaced it; so far so good. I'm going to get some pentosin and distilled H2O on Saturday after I cash my paycheck, then hopefully I'll be good to go for winter.

Thanks! Where's the best place to buy new coolant? Am I doomed to the VW dealer?

Sweet! I drive by your place every time I work (I work at the new Tully's in Depew). I'll leave early and stop by Friday. Thanks.
