I think it all depends on what brand phone you have. As for CDMA phones, they are always a step behind.

there was a so called email messege going around a while back about an 800 number you could call to block spam phonecalls. this however has always been illegal for companies to SPAM your cell phone with unwanted calls.

after a little search i came up with some info that might be helpful to some of you with text/ harassing phone messages.

Ok Verizon finally cught up with everyone signing up for text blocking. There's still no help on their site to help you find how to do it, but at least it's there now.

If you go to vtext.com and login there's a menu on the left. Scroll down to preferences and text blocking. You can block up to 15 addresses. But better still (I think) is at least for me, to block text messages sent from email. The ones I'm getting are coming from spammer@bogus.com. So hopefully this will knock them out. You can also block text from the web or just set it so only text to your nickname (myname@vtext.com) are allowed.

Setting my parental controls to high did absolutely nothing. I'll keep you posted again.

Well, almost a week now without any more SPAM text messages! Setting it to reject text messages from email seems to have done it...so far.
