Pat's 16v Rabbit - 06-08-2010, 03:06 PM

So I finally have time to work on this project, which has desperately been needing attention. I've decided to detail the results here. Why? I'm not really sure. Maybe to make myself think I have friends, because it's good motivation, or just to help out others doing something similar.

I'll try to keep things relatively simple, so this isn't a pain to read. (I'll probably fail at that.)

As some of you know, I have an '84 Rabbit GTI, which really needs some love. Last year, I took care of the brakes, suspension, and all of that stuff that makes a car safe. I was planning on getting the 16v swap done last winter, but school took up too much time. Lately, I've been getting sick of not being able to drive my baby. We used to have so much fun. . .

The motronic swap is not the most common in the world of 16v swaps, but I'll work through it. (The lost vortex threads are really missed right now.) This is what I'm doing:

2.0 16v (Cis-e Motronic)

I'll get the specifics of parts I plan on using, as well as some less shitty pictures soon. Who knows, maybe someone will find this all mildly entertaining. Maybe.

How's that? With euro bumpers and single rounds? JK, I'm sorry for your loss Seamus. Oh, and thanks for the words of advice, haha.

Update: So today I spent hours (as usual,) cross referencing between the bentleys and my wiring harnesses. It was a blast. I now have most of the wiring labeled, and my confusion and swear words printed nicely on a notepad, haha. Pictures and stuff later.

Have you looked into megasquirt? It may be worth your time to just run standalone instead of taking all the time and headaches of dealing with 20 year old fuel and spark managment

a well put together ms set up can be had for well under $1k, just an option maybe you should look into

Thanks Jam. I've thought about it a lot, haha. Not only just because of the headaches, but also bc of the possibilities. I've been helping my cousin get his msns setup working with his 85 trans am, and am planning on getting it set up in my rabbit eventually. Idk, I'm trying to get the motor in, and running the way it's "supposed to," and most importantly, understand as much about it as I can. Megasquirt is definitely amazing though, haha. I'm still amazed at all of the little things you can do with it.

Still I don't think there are many things more badass than this:
New 45 DCOE 152 Weber Carburetor
It's an idea I've always kicked around. For now though, I'll have to get it running with what I have until I get a better job, haha.

Edit: I <3 E.

Great project! Looking forward to the updates. This thing is gonna be a blast.
Jam has a pretty good suggestion with the MS.
Are you gonna make it out this weekend to the show at the rose garden?
