What would you do? broken VR6.... - 07-18-2010, 11:48 PM

2000 VW GTI VR6 5speed GLX (every option some i've never seen before)
Full story:
Sold the car on a Thursday, No noises ran great, pulled strong. I was told when i bought the car the HG was done around 100k car has 140k on it now, I installed a new clutch new radiator, and alternator while it was in my possession (bought it non running), I drove the car for 2 months even used it for work, while i caught up on some mait on my TDI. never had an issue. sold the car for 4500, the owner had it for 4 days even took it to the walker center, even blew out a front tire and had it replaced. Monday morning on his way to work he calls me from the north GI bridge at 6am. I get up drive there with Vag-com, look the car over pull 3 codes (Coolant sensor, Knock Sensor, Cam sensor)
CLeared the codes tried to start it nothing... he paid to have the car towed to my house.I order a cam sensor (I know of the codes its the only one to cause a no start), received the wrong one, company sent a new one so car has been here for almost 3 weeks, put new sensor in still nothing now im getting a 2nd code for engine speed sensor (so 2 codes are cam code, and Engine sped sensor (crank sensor)). it will crank all day long and back fire when you let go of the key. Im getting Both spark and fuel.... Im think it may be the chain. im 99% sure it is.
at this point I havent charged him for ANYTHING. Im going out of town Wednesday. for a week, he just want to know what it is.... Im paying out of my pocket to have it towed to another shop. Should I chip in on the repair?

I have a signed recite from him stating the car is as-is, but I do feel horrible. i know i would be uber pissed if I bought the car from a mechanic and it failed 4 days later and probably catastrophically. but on the other hand I KNOW he drove the HELL out of it for 4 days to the point he eat a front tire that had decent tread when i sold it. :/

SO what would you do?

"As is" is "As is"

Don't let this person hustle or guilt you into making repairs on a car that you sold boss.

Doing what you already have done makes you look guilty. Plus you already promised to have another shop fix it while you are out of town. Sounds like you're stuck. You said he killed a front tire that had half tread left in 4 days? Sounds like a real

Continued since I can't edit from my iPod...

He sounds like a real quality individual that I am thrilled to share the roads with. It sounds like he was beating on it when the engine was cold. I don't know any other way to induce such wear so quickly.

im assuming this was a business transaction in which the buyer and seller both understood the past history of problems the car had and was sold under "as-is" condition.

if this is true, i dont see how you have any obligation to continue to perform expensive repairs without full reimbursment. its his car, not yours, right? the signed bill of sale and exchange of money, contractually speaking, is a done deal. was there a verbal or written warranty made by you?

sure, nobody likes buying a car with potential problems, but thats what you get when you buy "as is" - a used car with potential problems included. sounds like youre a nice guy. dont let it be taken advantage of.

No i told him I would pay to have it towed to another shop (im just dolling it behind my TDI) to a friends shop, he is going to be charge to have it look at there, the only thing I agreed to is to have it towed.

I originally had it towed to my place to have it fixed for a fee but he guilted me into looking at it for free... I think the only way that I wont have to deal with him trying to guilt me into more is sending it to a 3rd party. 3rd party only knows the car is being towed over tue, has owners contact info. owner has shops contact info.

I made this thread just to see if people thought i was an a-hole or not... and make me feel a little better about walking away form the car.

I would never help anyone I sold a car to.
I don't know what they have done to it.
Then again, I always make sure I tell them about any issues I am aware of.

+1

beating on a car with 140k miles on it is a no no. My best friend has 120k miles on his TT and switched the apr programming to stock mode for that reason.

I think it was good measure to offer to take a look at the car since you were more familiar with it's quirks. But I think it's time to cut the cord.
