1999 tdi - 08-30-2010, 06:49 PM

I have always wanted a tdi. Recently I have been talking to a guy that has a diesel jetta. It has 56k on it runs drives "its a 5 speed" but needs a turbo. The body is basically rust free its from Nj. Hes asking $400 it burns oil because of the turbo I just dont know what im really getting myself into. I guess i need to know if its worth it, then if it is im going to know where to score a turbo.

If that is not a typo being its only $400 undoubtably buy it now!
If it is only $400 it makes one wonder why its so cheap? There
is either something seriously wrong with it, or the guy does not
know the value of the car.
Do you have any pics of it?

I believe he thinks a turbo is part of the problem. How much would it cost you to get it here from NJ? No doubt the car is worth at least $400 in parts, but by the time you get it here and running reliably I think it'll be more like $1500+.

If this is the car that sat at the shop on the corner of rt-394 and Boston-Colden rd. in Boston, its definitely a bit rough. It may have sat out in the rain with the sunroof open and a few windows down. I inquired about it last week, and was told by the shop owner that he would pass my info on to the owner of the car, but I received no call.

If you pass on it, I'd love to have the owners contact info. I need a commuter and have a complete running rotbox 98 tdi for donor stuff.

For 400 its worth it in parts lol, if you pass on it please let me know. just make sure the turbo is the only issue if the turbo broke make sure parts of it are not in the intake and or motor, best way to know is to disconnect the intake pipe and see if the motor smokes when running. the AHU (the MK3 motor) is a vary solid motor only down fall is they require a TB ever 60k

So I bought the car, it is for sure going to need a turbo. Im on the hunt for one as we speak. But its also not starting it will run if you bump start it. I was wondering if this is possibly due to the radio being out of the car and it throwing a security code? The same thing happend to my moms grand am I know different brands but similar problem. I have pluggend in differernt vw tape players but the original one is long gone. All the screens say safe. Im guessing thats whats prohibiting the starter. Any ideas?
