In that price range you will probably find a 96-98 A4 with 150k+ miles.

If you do go that route I would definitely look into finding a 12v V6 over a 1.8t.

My 12v had close to 180k on it when I sold it a few years back and ran like a top. That motor is quite stout.

just bought a 97 pearl white A4 from some old man in hamburg, guy owned 2 other audis and another vw, 173,000 miles but FULLY maintained on time every time(came with notebook of receipts and service records). I purchased it from the second owner of 9 years. Talked to the mechanic who has serviced the car for the past decade and everything was as described... Car is loaded and super clean v6 quattro. Only thing that doesnt work is the cruise control and the tape player( after market HU already installed). No rust beautiful paint no rips on interior etc... I paid 3350 so that should give you an idea of what to shoot for. Good luck!

Thanks. I had decided maintenance history was a must; been looking at BMW too, also 944's. I looked at the A6 for under 2k on CL, the one with the cracked bumper, white interior. Yes the bumper was cracked and that was an accurate description of the bumper. It was the ripped off lower molding and scrapes from front to back that caught my eye; that and the 'change the transmission fluid and the transmission will work fine.' Going to the 'Automobile Show at the Gacioch Estate tonight, I bet I find something there.

It was off of Old Lakeshore Road, Derby. The Buffalo Club put it on. I went as a guest of a judge I know; the cars were nice; the guy had the usual Cord, Deusenbergs, RR; a '70's V12 Jaguar - automatic; he had about 300; said he is not a purist, just buys what he likes and drives them; he had some nice old cars, he himself was pretty much a regular guy very approachable; in fact for an event that could have been very stuffy (there were those people too - they were amusing) 90% of the folks I talked with were just plain okay people; I have had Porsche's most of my life but there were two R8's there and I noticed I would pick the Audi; what a nice looking and sounding car. The guy and gal who had it said it was a joy to drive.
